Kathy A. Dawson has practiced law in Houston since 2006 and is Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law. Her law practice encompasses all aspects of simple and complex estate planning, probate and estate administration, trust structuring and administration, asset protection planning, marital property agreements, charitable planning, and business succession planning. She counsels families, entrepreneurs and professionals on the most effective strategies for protecting assets and business interests, preserving wealth through multiple generations, and minimizing estate and gift taxes. She has experience in a wide variety of advanced wealth preservation strategies, including family limited partnerships and all types of revocable and irrevocable trusts.
Kathy also assists fiduciaries and family members navigate through Will probates and estate administration, including asset gathering and appraisal, payment of the decedent’s debts, filing estate tax returns, and distributing assets to beneficiaries. She has more than two decades of experience with the challenging emotional and financial circumstances that accompany the death of a loved one, and her calm and compassionate nature helps her clients feel at ease during very trying times.
She routinely collaborates with her clients’ existing team of professionals (including accountants, financial advisors, and life insurance professionals) to brain-storm ideas and develop maximally effective estate planning and wealth preservation strategies. When issues beyond her scope of practice arise, Kathy draws on the diverse skills and experience of colleagues in the firm to design the best strategy that will achieve her client’s goals.
A native of the Houston area, Kathy earned her undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University and her Juris Doctorate from South Texas College of Law. Prior to becoming a lawyer and while in law school, she worked in the oil and gas industry for a decade for both independent operators and global corporations.
Outside of work, Kathy volunteers for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as a head cook for the Grounds Tickets Committee, and enjoys football, traveling, hiking, fishing, and game nights.
